(Certified Equipment
(Chris

30 years of IECEx Three questions to IECEx Chair Katy Holdredge
IECEx, the IEC System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Explosive Atmospheres, is celebrating its 30th anniversary – a huge landmark for the IEC! We sit down with its Chair, Katy Holdredge, to look at past achievements but also at what is planned in the future.
Can you point to three important IECEx milestones during its 30 years of activity?
The first important milestone was the establishment of the IECEx Certified Equipment Scheme in 2003, which is an ISO/IEC 17067 Type 5 certification scheme, combining product type testing and ongoing surveillance, representing the highest level of oversight and assurance. This scheme generates the highest volume of certificates and revenue for IECEx and set the stage for success in other areas.
Another critical milestone was the establishment of the IECEx Certification of Personnel Competencies (CoPC) Scheme in 2010, which was the first scheme of its kind offered under the IEC conformity assessment umbrella and paved the way for a similar certification scheme for another IEC Conformity Assessment System, IECEE. Lastly, a new service offering for the IECEx certification of equipment, components and systems associated with the production, dispensing and use of gaseous hydrogen, in 2022, was another important milestone. It demonstrated how the IECEx adapts to meet the demands of industry and works with our partner Standard Development Organizations (SDOs) through the establishment of liaisons, such as with ISO/TC 197/SC 1 which deals with standards for the use of hydrogen at scale. How do you see it evolving in coming years?
I think IECEx will continue to adapt to meet the needs of our members, whether that be the inclusion of newly published standards relevant to our industries or consideration of new service offerings that support the complete lifecycle of the products used in potentially explosive atmospheres. There are some products being introduced in the Ex-market including Artificial Intelligence (AI), such as robots that perform inspection, maintenance and monitoring functions. The potential for this technology is exciting because it can reduce human exposure in these dangerous locations. However, we will need to continue to work closely with our SDOs to ensure this technology is safe and reliable for its intended use.
How are you planning to celebrate its anniversary?
The thirty year anniversary was celebrated during our recent IECEx meetings in Beijing, China. The Chinese member body did a fantastic job of hosting the meetings and highlighting the anniversary with both internal and external stakeholders. In addition, our IECEx Executive Secretary, Chris Agius, created a one-page summary highlighting the IECEx, 30 years of Global Confidence in Explosive Atmospheres, that was presented at the meetings.
